Book Two

Anne of Avonlea

This next book finds Anne at the age of sixteen. She becomes the teacher of her childhood school near Green Gables. She finds that teaching is not as easy as she thought.

Even though she is now a full time teacher, her adventures outside the school still continue. After all, she is still young and full of energy and mischief. Who but our Anne would fall through the roof of a chicken coop while searching for a china platter in a thunderstorm? Who but Anne would plan a wonderful elaborate luncheon for a famous visitor, only to have the guest fail to show up. And then arrive days later when Anne is spring cleaning?

Also a pair of twins come to live at Green Gables. Davy and Dora Keith. Lots of fun begins and a real trying of both Anne and Marilla’s patience. Everything from falling into fresh pies to splashing through mud puddles on the way to Sunday School.

Anne and Diana’s friendship continues of course, and so does their adventures. They discover a hidden garden in the forests near Avonlea, with a romantic history and a secret stone cottage, wherein lives the wonderful Miss Lavender Lewis, that entertains pretend guests at tea!

And yet another story unfolds. Romance, just a hint of it, replaces the old rivalry between Anne and Gilbert Blythe. Anne wonders if "romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare," but "crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways." Anne finally, but reluctantly steps from childhood into young womanhood. "With all its charm and mystery, its pain and gladness
